Oversubscription Criteria

Where there are more learners seeking places than the number of places available, the over-subscription criteria will be applied in the order set out below to rank pupils until the overall figure for the year group is reached.

  1. Looked after children (children in public care) and previously looked after children, children previously in Care outside of England – Children who appear to Medway Council to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted. A child is regarded as having been in state care in a place outside of England if they were accommodated by a public authority, a religious organisation or any other provider of care whose sole purpose is to benefit society.
  2. Children who will have a brother or sister (including children living as siblings in the same family unit) on the roll of the school at the time of the sibling’s admission.
  3. Children who at the time of application have a parent who is a member of staff at the school (where the member of staff has been employed for three years or more at the time at which the application for admission is made and/or where the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage).
  4. Up to 10 places for students who have demonstrated aptitude in sport (rugby) by rank order of performance in the aptitude assessment.
  5. Nearness of children’s homes. Distances and routes calculated will represent the shortest route to school from the child’s home address using Google Maps software. Those living closer to the school will receive the higher priority. The start point will be the centre point of the nearest road or footpath known to the mapping system to the seed point of the child’s home. This may not always be the postal address road, in circumstances where an alternative road or footpath is actually nearer to the seed point of the property. Where a child’s home is situated on a new road the distance calculation will begin from the nearest available known road plotted in the mapping software. New property developments may be subject to this. The end point is the centre point of the road adjacent to the main school gate. The same end point is used for all distance calculations to the school.

Sporting (Contact Rugby) Aptitude Assessment

Up to 10 sporting aptitude places are available for entry to Year 12. A student is only eligible for a Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude place if they have achieved the minimum academic entry requirements. Sporting aptitude places are open to girls and boys.

Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude places will be allocated as per the oversubscription criteria and allocated in rank order of scores from the Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude Assessment Day.

All applicants who have registered for sporting (contact rugby) aptitude places will be invited to attend a Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude Assessment Day. There is one opportunity for candidates to be assessed for sporting aptitude.

Any candidate who has expressed an interest in the sporting aptitude test (via the application form) will be invited to attend the Sporting Aptitude Assessment which will take place on Saturday 25th January 2025. There will be no other opportunity to attend the Sporting Aptitude Assessment. The sporting aptitude assessment will give all participants the opportunity to demonstrate their potential and propensity to develop ability in sport through a variety of tasks and tests. The tests will be administered by our own specialist PE staff and the process will be subject to oversight by an independent assessor. Scores will be awarded for each element of the aptitude assessment. When all assessments have been completed a rank order of applicants for the Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude places will be produced and a threshold will be applied. Up to 10 candidates above the threshold, in rank order, will be eligible for a place under the sporting aptitude criterion.

If a student participates in the Sporting Aptitude Assessment but is not successful in gaining a score to be considered for one of these places, they can still be considered for a place in Year 12 at the school under the other admission criteria. Taking part in the Sporting Aptitude Assessment in no way disadvantages a student in their chances of gaining a place in the school under other admission criteria.

On the application form, students will find a section on Sporting (contact rugby) Aptitude which they can select if they wish to participate in the Sport Aptitude test. Please note that there is no other date available for the sporting aptitude test to take place.

The rationale for reserving up to 10% of the school’s Year 12 places for those who excel in the sporting aptitude assessment is to ensure we widen opportunities for young people who show both academic excellence and an additional range of skills.
