Do you want to learn more about one of the biggest industries in the UK? The Hospitality and Catering industry employs 2.9 million people and generates 130bn in economic activity. It is a dynamic and vibrant industry that is the third largest private sector employer in the UK.
There are two compulsory units, unit one is the hospitality and catering industry; which is an externally assessed unit and the second unit is titled hospitality and catering in action; which is an internally assessed unit. Unit 1 enables learners to gain and develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the hospitality and catering industry including:

- 1.2 How hospitality and catering providers operate
- 1.3 Health and safety in hospitality and catering
- 1.4 Food safety in hospitality and catering
Whilst unit 2 enables learners to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of the importance of nutrition and how to plan nutritious menus. Students will learn the skills needed to prepare, cook and present dishes. They will also learn how to review their work effectively by utilising a variety of different ways to evaluate their work including costing, nutritional analysis and sensory analysis methods.
This Vocational Award will be graded Level 1 Pass, Level 2 Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. Generally, a Level 2 Pass is the equivalent of a GCSE Grade 4, and a Level 2 Distinction is the equivalent of a GCSE 8+
Unit 1: The hospitality and catering industry Written examination is a 1 hour 20 minutes paper that is made up of a mixture of short and extended answer questions and makes up 40% of qualification at 80 marks.
Unit 2: Hospitality and catering in action is a controlled assessment with approximately 12 hours worth of student led assessment and worth 60% of qualification at 120 marks. An assignment brief will be provided by WJEC which will include a scenario and several tasks that will change annually.
