CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The co-curricular programme of this school is extensive. It involves music, drama, sport and outdoor activities to name just a few. Clubs and societies organised by both staff and pupils operate at lunchtime or after school.

Out of school activities are regarded as an important enrichment of educational opportunity rather than a tacked on optional extra.The Headteacher has access to funds to alleviate cases of financial hardship. Request for assistance are always treated in the strictest confidence.

Whilst the central thrust of our education programme is, of course, the classroom, we see it as our task to encourage pupils to experience education or recreational activities which will contribute to their general development, giving them opportunities to show initiative and take responsibility and in many cases, stay with them and continue to enrich their lives as adult hobbies and interest, long after they have forgotten their chemistry or their history!

There are so many activities, not all of them have been listed on this website. Frequently it is not a problem encouraging pupils to participate, rather it is a case of curbing natural enthusiasm to manageable proportions.

The Careers department at SJWMS

There is a comprehensive careers education programme for all year groups delivered through Life Skills lessons, tutorials and across the curriculum. This includes activities on self-development, career exploration, and career management and explores further and higher education options. Students are also engaged in work related learning, including work experience in year 12. Impartial (unbiased) careers guidance interviews are available for access by any student and appointments can be made via Head of School or direct using the link below to contact Mrs Milliner, the Careers Co-ordinator. The Careers Office is in the library. Impartial advice can also be accessed from Medway Youth Trust and the National Careers Service, which helps adults too. Use their callback facility. In addition, students can access a variety of careers related information in the library and on Moodle/Careers. The latest news, including labour market information and job alerts, is posted through the announcement facility on Show My Homework. We have a licence for the careers software called Kudos, which makes career suggestions for students based on their answers to questions about jobs and work. It is also an exploration tools with job profiles on hundreds of jobs. Passportfolio enables students to check their skills, compile a CV and personal statement and to track their career plans. The Governing body has recently committed to the school aspiring to achieve the Investors in Careers Award to recognise the good practices we have in place.

Booking a Careers Interview

You can arrange a Careers Interview via your Head of School or by using the link here. Your careers interview is a confidential, impartial discussion with a qualified Careers Guidance Adviser. Don’t worry if you have no definite plans. We are here to encourage and support you while you are making decisions about your future. Depending on your needs, it may be helpful to have several discussions, so don’t think of your careers interview as a ‘one-off’ event.

The school is an affiliate member of the Careers Development Institute (CDI) and the Careers Co-ordinator abides by their code of conduct which can be found here.

WORK EXPERIENCE IS IN YEAR 12.

YEAR 12 WORK EXPERIENCE WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 6TH JULY – 10TH JULY 2020

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER – If you are arranging your OWN PLACEMENT then you must bring three key pieces of information to your work experience co-ordinator at school.

These are as follows:

  • Employer’s name,
  • Contact name (very important)
  • Contact telephone number

These must be provided on a named piece of paper as soon as the placement has been fully agreed. Your work experience co-ordinator will then exchange this information for your student PIN card which will enable you to enter the details on to the web view system. This can take place any time from now on and MUST BE COMPLETED BY [DATE TO BE CONFIRMED] for those placements outside Kent/Medway and by [DATE TO BE CONFIRMED] for those within Kent/Medway.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is work-related learning?

It is a planned activity which uses the context of work to develop skills, knowledge and understanding which will be useful in work life.

Who organises the work experience placements?

The Medway Business Education Partnership (MEBP) organise work experience placements on behalf of the school. Students and parents can organise their own placments, but they must be subject to MEBP’s Health & Safety checks.

Can parents and students organise their own work experience placements?

Yes, some students and parents organise their own placement, but they must be subject to MEBP’s Health and Safety checks. Self-organised placement outside of Kent must be entered on to MEBP’s Webview system by {date to be confirmed] those inside Kent & Medway by [date to be confirmed.]

Do students get a choice of placements?

Yes, they can make up to four selections in order of preference. Almost all will be allocated one of these, depending on availability. The only problems that might arise are when the selected placement falls through for an unforeseen reason and the other choices are already taken – but this is rare occurrence.

What should I do if my son/daughter doesn’t like the placement he/she has been offered?

We encourage students to stick to what they are offered. We believe that students won’t know what a placement hs to offer unless they give it a go. The idea is to get an experience of a work place and the people within it, not necessarily to get the experience to kick-start a future career. They are likely to learn just as much from a placement that is a little outside their expectations and comfort zone, as from one within. If students are adamant that their placement is unsuitable then please email the school on millinerj@sjwms.co.uk The earlier this is done, the more likely it is that MEBP can do something about it. If it is left to the last minute there may be nothing that can be done.

Are placements health and safety checked?

Yes. All work places are employers are checked by MEBP. If you organise your own placement, these must also be check by MEBP staff, which is why the deadline for organising your own placement is earlier than for those placements outside of Kent/Medway.

What should I do if my son/daughter is sent home from their placement?

Contact the school immediately and the school will contact MEBP. Legally students are still involved in a school activity on work experience.

Will my son/daughter be visited at his placement by someone from the school?

The WEX Co-ordinator supported by colleagues will make every attempt to contact all placements during work experience week.

What is the Work Experience Diary?

Part of the student’s work experience commitment is that they are required to maintain a diary to record their activities and experiences, as well as the development of certain key skills. We require this record to be completed shortly after the end of the placement.

How is excellent performance during the placement recognised?

 A work experience certificate is issued to exceptional students. To receive this, students must first let employers and the school know that this is something they are interested in, and then they must complete an on line short written assignment, then there are staff interviews and more evidence is required.

My son/daughter gets free school meals – will a free lunch be provided at the placement?

No – your son/daughter may need to bring a packed lunch unless the employer says otherwise.
